A sex pheromone component was isolated from the hexane extract of females of the yellowish elongate chafer, Heptophylla picea Motschulsky by chromatography. The activity was examined by attraction in a glass tube and in the field. The isolated component was analyzed by GC-MS and NMR, and its chemical structure was estimated to be 7, 15-hexadecadien-4-olide. The geometric isomerism was determined to be Z by comparative GC-MS and NMR analyses of the isolated component and synthetic E- and Z-isomers. Synthetic (Z)-7, 15-hexadecadien-4-olide demonstrated a potent attractiveness equal to that of two virgin females in the field.
