The relations between direction-of-motion stereotypes for turning and sliding controls and the control function concepts for appliances and equipment used in the living space were investigated experimentally. Stereotypes were found for some control function concept. In the ON concept or INCREASE concept for control functions, strong stereotypes were found for clockwise, forward, upward, and to the right. In the OFF concept or DECREASE concept for control function, strong stereotypes were found for the anti-clockwise, backward, downward, and to the left. Subject groups stereotype differences and experimental condition influence on stereotypes were found.
