Abstract
Preservation of historic sites and monuments in Japan dates.back to late 1890' s, when the industrial revolution set off and regional developments began to demolish local landscape and historic sites throughout the country. First occurred as local movements, preservation of historic sites and monuments became patriotic, and later imperialistic influenced by the nationalism particularly after the introduction of the Historic Sites, Landscape and Natural Monuments Protection Act 1919. Historic sites related to the Emperors are put the first priority by the 1919 act until the end of the Second World War.
