The hygienic environment of accommodations in Japan is now deteriorating owing to the rapid increase in private lodgings. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate their hygiene status.
Hotels showed good hygienic environments, whereas private lodgings had hygienic problems. Most of the private lodgings d id not install a mechanical ventilation system, and in some cases, CO2 concentrations exceeded 1000 ppm during the stay. Accommodations with cooking space and absence of manager revealed to have higher risks of contamination. Therefore, standardizing management methods and increasing management awareness leads to lower risks of contamination.
