Numerical solutions of unsteady viscous flows around rectangular cylinders with different depth-breadth ratios are presented by using the third-order upwind finite element scheme. In all the calculations in this paper, a turbulent model, such as the two-equation model or the large-eddy simulation, is not incorporated in the scheme. The rectangular cylinders are therefore placed in a uniform flow. It is shown that the computed aerodynamic forces acting on the rectangular cylinders and the Strouhal numbers are in good agreement with other computational and experimental results.
