The area of Higashi Nada Ward, Kobe City was seriously damaged by the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake. The earthquake damages of all wood houses were surveyed in the part of 81.6 ha in this ward where the seismic intensity of 7th degree on the JMA scale was evaluated. The total number of surveyed wood houses are about 2000. The detail investigation of 192 wood houses was also carved out through out the stricken area. The distribution of shear wall length ratios against floor areas obtained from the latter investigation was assumed to be a normal distribution. Then, the damage percentages were calculated using this statistical model. The critical shear wall length ratio against collapse was statistically calculated and verified by static balance taking into consideration the P-Δ effect. Non-linear earthquake response analyses were also carried out.
