The damage to structures caused by an earthquake does not always coincide with the PGA or PGV of the ground motion. In order to interpret the destructiveness of the ground motion to structures, we propose a collapse base shear coefficient C_c and its spectrum. The C_c is the maximum yield base shear coefficient when the structure collapses because of P-Δ effect, even if the structure is infinitely ductile. This is the largest difference between C_c spectrum and nonlinear base shear coefficient spectra which have already been proposed by several researchers. The C_c spectrum shows a good accordance with the damage extent of structures caused by many previous earthquakes.
