The embedment characteristics of wood are fundamental and very important to evaluate the structural mechanisms and seismic performances of traditional timber structures. In order to evaluate them effectively, elastic surface displacements of wood in partial compression are formulated by applying Pasternak model to wood, taking the orthotropic properties into account. The Pasternak model is a refined mechanical model of a continuum which can express the surface displacements in a closed-form function appropriately. Thus, the embedment characteristics which depend on the direction of the grain are clarified theoretically on the basis of the orthotropic properties.
