Abstract
Design of nursing unit chiefly depends on the relation between patients' demand for nursing and the nursing organization. The purpose of this survey is to analyze the in-patients to find the appropriate form of nursing unit of the general hospital. Fifteen hospitals were chosen for the investigation. Some of the results are as follows; 1) The number of beds included in one nursing unit is about 40 in medical and surgical wards, and 30 in children's and maternity wards. 2) We could get the information on the age, the kind of disease, and the length of stay. 3) The proportion of the number of patients who will be admitted to each nursing unit in Progressive Patient Care program is (a) less than 5 per cent for Intensive Care Unit, (b) about 50 per cent for Intermediate Care Unit, (c) about 20〜30 per cent for Self Care Unit and (d) about 20 per cent for Long Term Care Unit.
