Abstract
In the present paper (part 1) the author has indicated that the main factors involed in the changes of environment are the subdivision of housing sites and the increase in the numbeer of apartment buildings. This paper is largely concerned with the latter. The researches were conducted in several are as along the Tokyu and the Odakyu Lines in Megura and Setagaya Wards during the period between 1974 and 1975. The main themes discussed are 1) analyses of the operational conditions of apartment-building proprietors, 2) analyses of the people living in apartmetn buildings, and 3) analyses of the people living in detached houses. The results obtained may be summarized as follows : (1) The demand and supply of apartment bulldings are wellbalanced in both quality and quantity. (2) In the areas surveyed there is a tendency that the number of apartment buildings may increase in the future. (3) The residential areas surveyed have a feature quite distinct from that of the downtown or suburban areas, as seen from the viewpoint of the occupancy of apartment buildings. Toward the end the author suggests some measures to control the urban renewal process.
