Abstract
One of the typical steel column bases is formed by a set of base plate welded to the bottom of the column and anchor bolts embedded in a reinforced concrete base. Ultimate strength and deformability of this type of column bases have been examined by adopting various combination of the base plate, anchor bolts and concrete strength and empirical formulas for the strength, stiffness and ultimate deformability of the colum bases have been derived, which may enable a more rational earthquake resistant design of steel structures.
