Abstract
This is the report of the investigation on the old private houses, made by the members of Professor Ohta's seminar in 1962, by the request of Nagano prefecture. The subject of the research is the twenty still-remaining houses, built between the beginning of the eighteenth century and the early twentieth century. The houses built in the mid-eighteenth century show the most unique characterestics. The houses built at that time, are in common with other private houses in snowy region in several points regarding the plane figure in structure. However, the space for receiving guests in those houses, celled "Zashiki", has very original form; that is, tne space is larger in larger in area, with less equipment, and more closed than that of other regions. These characteristics will be helpful in proving the process of formation of reception rooms in modern Japanese private houses.
