Monitoring of sea water aerosol which is known to be one of important deterioration agents in coastal areas was performed in Shimizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture which is located in Tokai district, Japan, from November 1983 to October 1984. Eighteen buildings in various distance from the seashore (10-4500m) were chosen for monitoring sites. Specimens for collecting sea water aerosol, were gauze and four types of surface finished steel sheets (precoated galvanized steel sheets, galvanized steel sheet, steel sheets coated with a red lead anticorrosive paint, and steel sheets coated with an acrylic emulsion paint). In each building, the specimens were put both on a wall face to the sea and on a wall back or side to the sea in order to examine the difference due to directions. All the specimens on the walls had been sheltered from rain and were exchanged for new ones in every month. Amounts of salinity were determined by colqrimetric analysis for chloride ions. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1) Monthly amounts of salinity showed logarithmic normal distribution at most monitoring sites. 2) The relation between seasonal changes in amounts of salinity and those in wind was examined, however, the correlation was not made clear in this study. 3) Amounts of salinity on the walls face to the sea were found to be significantly higher than those on the walls back or side to the sea within several hundreds meters from the, seashore. 4) The types of specimens also affected amounts of salinity. The measured values of salinity were decreased in the order of gauze, steel sheets coated with a red lead anticbrrosive paint, steel sheets coated-with an acrylic emulsion, precoated galvanized steel sheets, and galvanized steel sheets. 5) The distribution of amounts of salinity were primarily determined by the distance from the seashore. The relationships between the two could be obtained.
