A process for obtaining reliable Young's moduli of bearing soil strata (E) is discussed in this paper. The process is based on measurements of vertical strain (ε_υ) of bearing strata during excavation and building construction. E for settlement analyses must be determined based on the relation between E/E^´_0 and ε_υ during construction, where E^´_0 is the Young's modulus after excavation, which in turn is calculated from the Young's modulus E_0 from shear wave velocity before excavation. The relation between E/E^´_0 and ε_υ during excavation is not equal to the relation between E/E^´_0 and ε_υ in that E depends on both ε_υ, and stress level in the soil.
