This study focusses on seismic behavior of reinforced concrete columns with a gap, called "Structural Slits". The purpose of providing Structural Slits is to mitigate the undesirable effects of spandrels oh reinforced concrete frames, such as shear failure of columns during an earth-quake. This paper mainly discusses how to evaluate the maximum lateral load1 of a spandrel-column with Structural Slits, the moment distribution, the story displacement, and the failure mode of the column at that time. The equation proposed in this paper is derived from the reaction condition of a spandrel; this condition has been clarified in a previous paper published in .the Transaction of A. I. J., No.441.
