The strength of hollow steel spheres used as nodes in tubular space trusses is investigated. In this paper, the exact collapse load is obtained for hollow steel spheres subjected to uniaxial force by limit analysis. It is assumed that the shell material is rigid-plastic and obeys the yield condition which has been derived by Ohat and Prager based on the Tresca yield criterion. The analytical results are verified through comparison with test results. Further, a practical formula for predicting the strength of hollow steel spheres is proposed on the basis of the complete numerical solution.
