Time histories of earthquake energy input are discussed based on 16 strong-motion records during the 1987 Chiba-ken-toho-oki earthquake. The results indicate that 1) the energy input per 1 second shows its maximum in the main portion of ground motion which is found just after the first S wave arrival with duration of approximately 20 seconds. 2) the energy input is also accumulated before the main portion for the short-period motion and after the main portion for the longperiod motion, and 3) the S coda waves contribute to the energy input accumulated after the main portion.
