This report presents the results of the research on the building process using large diameter timber by contemporary “Miyadaiku”, carpenters specializing in shrine and temple. The building process is divided into three stages: procurement of timber, planning, and construction. By analyzing the relationship between each stage and the timber properties, such as wood grain, deformation and decay, we have clarified the intent of each planning phase and construction process.
