Abstract

This paper aims to consider the spatial flexibility in the house called E.1027 by Eileen Gray. Based on her discourse, we analyzed the formal elements with spatial flexibility in terms of the room position, the types of the formal operation and the relationships with the building body. As a result, we found that Gray realized the formal elements with spatial flexibility in all rooms, using the five types of the formal operation: “pivoting”, “folding”, “sliding”, “stretching” and “removing”. In especially, the operation methods of “pivoting” and “folding” were applied not only to furniture and also the fittings.
