This study investigates mesh resolution for the precise computation of flood loads on a square cylinder using computational fluid dynamics simulations. Even with a coarse mesh, the drag force in the longitudinal direction can be evaluated to some extent, in agreement with the previous experimental results. However, a proper evaluation of pressure distribution requires a mesh division of 50 or more subdivisions in the horizontal direction and 80 or more subdivisions in the corner regions relative to the representative width. Finally, flood loads obtained using an octree-based mesh were discussed for the precise computation.
