In Japan, traditional markets are on the decline, giving way to a surge in modern markets with diverse characteristics. The objective of this study is to assess the status of market-related initiatives undertaken by local governments, aiming to scrutinize markets as urban strategies that extend beyond mere attractive events. The results indicate that more than half of local governments have implemented market-related projects, yet less than 20% explicitly include such activities in their local government plans. We anticipate that this study will contribute concrete information to enhance our understanding of the broader landscape of market-related projects undertaken by local governments.
