Machiya townhouses and narrow streets, found across Japan, are historical and scenic resources. However, even in Kyoto, they are both rapidly disappearing. It causes to disappear Kyoto’s historical streetscapes. This study examined people’s impression evaluation of various streets with various ratio of Kyo-machiya and the street width, and analyzing how these factors impact people’s impressions of the streetscape. The results reveal the influence of coexistence of Kyo-machiya and “narrow” street on people’s perceptions, considering with other streetscape elements.
