This study clarifies the working environment for female construction workers in Japan. Semi-structured interviews were conducted for 13 female construction workers, in terms of working environment, challenges, and their own solution. This study shows that each female workers faced complex and diverse challenges, and struggle to balance between work and personal life in response to life events such as pregnancy and delivery, and reinstatement. In parallel, female workers strive to sustain work by consultation to employer regarding working hours, and with supports from family. This study suggests preparing a maternity/childcare leave system, diverse working style, and tolerant atmosphere.
