Abstract
Substance abuse is a major issue in Asia, requiring effective intervention tactics based on an appreciation of the need for social support in recovery. This scoping review, using PRISMA-ScR protocols, explored the impact of social support on drug abuse recovery in Asia, recognizing its significant role in reducing relapse rates. We found and included 15 relevant articles published between 2018 and 2023 using PubMed, SAGE, and Taylor & Francis. The studies encompassed quantitative and qualitative approaches from several fields. The analysis highlights the crucial roles of family, peers, the community, and relevant organizations in offering necessary support, accountability, and supervision. These support networks have been found to play an important role in improving treatment outcomes and promoting long-term recovery. Recognizing the importance of social support empowers individuals by providing tools and effective ways for maintaining recovery in the long run; this scoping review offers significant insights into the complex characteristics of social support within the Asian context. Ultimately, it contributes to developing interventions that recognize and capitalize on the effectiveness of supportive relationships in addressing substance addiction.
