Prosthodontic approach in dysphagia rehabilitation

Abstract

Intraoral appliances (removable dentures, PAP, PLP, etc.), which are effective dental approaches to improve the preparatory and oral stages of swallowing, are still not widely used in dysphagia rehabilitation. There are various reasons for this. This paper describes the basic knowledge that dentists should know when applying removable dentures and PAP at rehabilitation settings. This review will explain the differences between patients with and without dysphagia, and the principles of how to identify and deal with ill-fitting dentures, which are frequently seen in rehabilitation settings. In addition, we would like to express the personal opinion on the requirements of deepening cooperation between dental care and rehabilitation medical care professionals.
