In this paper the auther tried to review the substance of library and librarianship as well as diversified forms of library that have historically evolved, using not sociological method but epistemological one, and to create the three models of the library function. The fundamental idea to which this paper owed was A. N. Whitehead's epistemology, who was called by H. Read, British literary critic, as “a Descartes in the 20th century”. In respect of ideas (cosmism), comparisons were made between P. Butler and A. N. Whitehead, and also between J. H. Shera and N. Wiener. American history (“Baerd's New Basic History of the United States” 1944) was also introduced to review the background of library in the U. S.
The auther criticised Butler's view for his vague recognition of philosophy (epistemology) and science, as well as Shera's view for his crucial misunderstanding of roles of philosophy and science. Upon the basis of the conclusion deduced in this way. the auther introduced the origial pattern of library function and diversified two patterns, which historically evolved and now have emerged not only within the library framework, but also every where in society (family, groups, etc.). The auther proposed to call this concept (patterns) “social utilization of books”,which shoud be the foundation of library science.
