Results are reported of an analysis of the reference inquiries received and recorded at the Reference Department of Rikkyo University Library over a three-year period. Variables used in the analysis include patron affiliation, inquiry mode, inquiry type, source type, and search process. Reference inquiries are tabulated by these variables, and then several problems identified are discussed. Finally, some suggestions are made on directional transactions, potential users needs, staff training and development, systems for recording statistics and inquiries, and the like.
