Abstract
In librarianship there exist three facets, type of library, material and problem, according to the 4th edition of Colon Classification. Associated with the history and description of libraries, two other categories, space and time, manifest themselves in this subject, too. It is obvious that the energy facet of the subject consists of three kinds of operations through which
(1) energy is applied to the library materials : acquisition, cataloging, classification, mechanical preparation, etc.
(2) energy (not necessarily physical) is transferred to readers: lending, assistance to readers, extension work, etc.
(3) energy is accumulated within the library to make better services possible: administration, executive and finance, building, etc.
In UDC aad CC, isolate numbers are preceded by thier respective connective symbols as a dot or .a placed before the notation representing chronological divisions. The present writer attempts to use the first digit of isolate numbers as the facet indicator.
  1. Period
  2. Geographical area
  3. Administration. Executive
  4. Processing. Technical services
  5. Special material
  6. Services to readers. Library activities
  7. Type of library
  8. Class of clientele
Using colon just as the boundary mark between any two facets, we can, then, easily construct the classification symbol for such a compound subject as the ‘public library service to children through audio-visual materials’ for which our notation will be L 82: 73: 58. Alternative locations are provided under either L 73: 82: 58 or L 58: 82: 73.
