Thailand can be seen as representative of the East Asian Miracle, as it had successfully developed during 1980's and the early 1990's. One of the factors that provided for Thailand's economic growth was positive inducement of FDI, which, however, became one of the causes of Asian Financial Crisis in 1997. An important concept that has been contributing to the re-development of Thailand after the financial crisis is "Sufficiency Economy", which is based on the philosophy of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Sufficiency Economy supposes to lead people to a balanced way of life and to be the main sustainable development theory for the country (UNEP). The 9th Economic and Social Development plan (2002-2006) took this concept as the basis to national development, and the role of agriculture sector has been reconsidered within the notion of sustainable development. Under a Sufficiency Economy paradigm, together with the Dual Track Policy of the Thaksin government, environmentally friendly agriculture and value added products have been strategically promoted. In the case of the rice market, high quality rice, such as GI fragrant rice, together with organic rice, functional rice and so on, have recently been promoted both in domestic and international rice markets.
