Limb atmospheric infrared spectrometer (LAS) is overviewed. It was born on the satellite OHZORA (EXOS-C) for global atmospheric measurements. First, we discuss the characteristics of LAS; it is (1) a solar-occultation limb sensor, (2) an infrared sensor, and (3) a multichannel spectroscopic sensor. Then, we discuss the stratospheric ozone in the low-latitude northern hemisphere in April 1984 with use of the data from LAS. In this discussion, we point out two characteristics of ozone distribution: (1) total column ozone is less over the Pacific ocean, (2) it is maximum at a longitude of 90° These characteristics agree with Dütch's April model and TOMS data. Yet, the cause for these characteristics was not known. Since the LAS data are advantageous in altitude-distribution analysis, we can propose a hypothetical model by the present analysis. Finally, the future development of LAS is briefly discussed; the improved LAS, ILAS, is planned to be launched in 1995 for ADEOS.
