A metabolite of thalidomide, 5′-hydroxythalidomide (1), was crystallized from acetonitrile solution. The angle between the least-square planes of the glutarimide ring and the phthalimide plane was 83.52(6)°. This conformation was similar to that of thalidomide and the thalidomide structure was not significantly affected by the hydroxylation of the glutarimide ring.
