Abstract
Teratological effects of SF-837, a new macrolide antibiotic,on dd-strain mice were studied and following results were obtained.
The dosages, 0.5, 1, 2 and 3g/kg/day of SF-837 were administered orally for 6 days from 8th to 13th day of gestation.
1) About 43% of mothers in 2g-medicated group and 82% in 3g-group died.
2) In pregnant mice, decrease in mean body weight by the medication was observed compared with that of the control.
3) In fetal mortality, no significant difference was observed between the control and the medicated group.
4) A few skeltal malformations, usually found in our exprience of the past studies, were observed in every group. It is unlikely that these malformations have no relation with this drug.
5) One cephalomyelorachisiasis in control group, one excencephalia and cleft lip in 0.5g-group and one excencephalia and facial cleft in 2g-group were observed.
During the course of suckling period of 0.5g-group, two polydactylia were observed.
