Abstract

The author, using 158 hamsters of both sexes of various ages ranging from birth to 300 days, made a systematic study on the cyst in the pituitary gland. The results obtained were as follows:
54 out of 158 pituitaries were found to contain epithelial ciliated cysts in the anterior lobe and 4 in the pars intermedia. The cysts measured from 40 to 240μ in their largest diameter, although varying in size. They were generally round or oval in shape. The epithelium of these cysts were composed of cuboidal or columnar ciliated cells, among which there were also found goblet cells and pin cells. The cyst contents were mostly colloid and destroyed cells, but rarely blood cells. These cysts were considered as a derivative of embryonal nasopharyngeal elements.
In addition, the so-called RATHKE's cyst was not included here.
