The recent survey on 31,353 married couples disclosed the real conditions of diffiusion of birth control as above, which may be summarized as follows: Birth control spreads proportionately to the distance of cultured areas in the order of cities, towns, farming, mountain and fishing villages, and those who have received a higher education are leading the practice. From the viewpoint of professions it easily spreads to salaried men whose incomes are regular, while it spreads slowly to farmers, fishermen and labourers. At the same time there are many people who practise birth control out of sheer necessity for living: on the other hand it may be said that people in general are mostly ignorant of such a problem. Consequently, the present rate of practice is only 11.7%, and most of those who begin birth control have a tendency to practise it only after having an experience of artificial abortion once before, and they are far from recognizing the fact that birth control is a preventive method.
