A new method to produce nano-particles is proposed, which is based on spontaneous nucleation in a ternary solution system caused by local high supersaturation. It does not require severe conditions or sophisticated device. The principle was demonstrated with the potassium chloride - sodium chloride -water system. Local high supersaturations were created in the ternary system when small pieces of NaCl crystals were dissolving in a saturated binary KCl aqueous solution. By varying the amount and size of NaCl seed crystals as well as temperature, the size and the shape of particles of KCl were measured and the formation of nano-particles was confirmed. The conditions for nano-particle formation were discussed.
