The alkylation of 1-dodecene with hexane was carried out with/without water in the absence of catalyst in a small bomb-type reactor over the temperature range from 523 to 673 K at pressures from 70 to 200 atm and reaction times from 10 to 720 min. The major products were two C18 saturated hydrocarbons: 4-ethylhexadecane and 5-methylheptadecane, and other C18H38 isomers, and a trace of 1-dodecene dimer were detected. The yields of C18H38 isomers were correlated separately with 5-methylheptadecane yield, apparently irrespective of the reaction conditions. The yields increased with pressure, as the 1-dodecene conversion increased with pressure. When HCl was added, the 1-dodecene conversion increased, but the product yields decreased.
