It is well known that a flame has electrical properties because a region of high ion
concentration is formed in the vicinity of the flame reaction zone by the ionic chemical reaction
when the hydrocarbon type fuel burns. Thus, it is well recognized that the flame is also a kind of
plasma. In the field of combustion engineering, researches around the field of detonation are
actively conducted from the viewpoint of applications to internal combustion engines such as pulse detonation engines. The propagation velocity of the flame reaction zone (combustion wave) of the detonation wave can be measured by the ion probe method. The ion probe method is an application of the Langmuir probe method. The Langmuir probe method is a method of measuring the plasma density from the magnitude of the current flowing when a metallic short needle is inserted into the plasma and a direct current voltage is applied thereto. Similarly in the ion probe method, a metallic probe is inserted into the flame reaction zone, and the ion current is measured from the magnitude of the current flowing when a direct current is applied to the probe. In this study, we have conducted the velocity measurement of the combustion wave in the detonation with Shchelkin spiral by the ion probe method.
