We compared segmental differences of intestinal fermentation activity of carp by measuring gas productivity in micro-scale batch culture. Carp intestine was divided into 3 segments (proximal, middle and distal segments). The volume of released gas during 6 h incubation was greater in distal segment than those in the other segments. The volume of released gas was also greater in middle segment than that in proximal segment. The result indicated that intestinal fermentation activity of carp varies among segments. This study appears to suggest that the substantial fermentation site of this fish intestine is posterior.
