Ovarian maturation of the tiger puffer, Takifugu rubripeswas successfully induced by gonadotropic hormone injections. Eleven females were obtained from commercial catch landed at the fish markets of Mogi and Oseto Fishery Cooperatives, Nagasaki Prefecture, during the spawning season from the end of March to the end of April, 1992. Gonadotropic hormones injected were HCG (500 IU/kg fish) and homogenized chum salmon pituitary gland (7 mg/kg fish) . Ovarian maturation in nine fish was induced from 95 to 109 hours after the injections at 14.8-18.0°C water temperature. Five fish showed high fertilization rates of 68-96 %, of which, three spawners had high hatching rates of 60, 70, and 75 %, respectively. The larvae from treated fish showed the same growth and survival rates as those obtained from natural spawning fish.
