The embayment connected to the river (called Wand in Japanese) is an ecologically important environment for many freshwater animals. From May 2023 to February 2024, a monthly sampling survey of freshwater fish was conducted at two embayment and one mainstream areas in the lower reaches of the Kinokawa River, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. A total of 1,142 individuals of freshwater fishes belonging to 5 orders, 8 families and 19 species were collected, with heterogeneity in species composition and fish size observed among sampling areas. The occurrence and growth investigated on three major species (Carassius sp., Squalidus sp., and Opsariichthys platypus) and two invasive alien species (Lepomis macrochirus macrochirus and Micropterus nigricans) indicated that all these species used the embayment as a breeding and nursery area.
