Yamamura et al. have previously reported that an antigen-antibody reaction in tuberculosis played an important role in the formation of cavities. According to these findings, it was attempted to produce cavities in rabbit lungs by heat-killed staphylococci. The organisms suspended in saline, paraffin oil and unhydrous lanolin, were injected into lungs of rabbits sensitized with the organisms suspended in the Freund's complete adjuvant. Cavities and necrotic foci were formed in the lungs of either sensitized or non-sensitized rabbits. However these foci in the lungs of sensitized animals were formed earlier and were larger in diameter than those of non-sensitized animals. Granulomatous changes were observed in the lungs of rabbits which have been intravenously inoculated of heat-killed staphylococci suspended in saline. From the experimental results in the present study, it was assumed that the cavitation by staphylococci was promoted by antigen-antibody certain reaction and intravenous inoculation of heatkilled staphylococci suspended in saline induced protective effect against the formation of cavities by injection of the same organisms.
