Abstract
Yatsu landscapes are characterized by the valley-floor paddy fields and valley-slope woodlands. The sequences of valley floor and valley-slope land-use changes were identified using grid-cell data from 1950s, 1970s and 1990s. The results enabled the land-use changes to be classified into 2 types in 1950s, and 5 types in 1970s and 1990s respectively. They suggest that the sequence of land-use changes were heavily influenced by the improvement, abandonment and urbanization of paddy fields and woodlands. In addition, the following work discusses the influence of topography on these changes.
