Hitherto the function of each muscle has been chiefly investigated from the anatomical standpoint, so it may be said that its function was just presumed indirectly without any positive demonstration. The electromyographic method, which is a method employing the action current of muscle as a indicator of the activity, can be said to be a most reliable and useful method for this purpose.
For recording the action current of muscle there are two procedures, the one is by the surface electrode and the other by coaxial needle electrode. The former is now generally employed in the study of the function of arm and leg muscles in U. S. A., but is not suitable for clarifying the function of each muscle, while the latter, which has not yet been used in this field, can prove the activity of each muscle in question. The author tried to investigate the function of each muscle by means of the coaxial needle electrode. Results obtained are as follows:
(1) Musclus glutaeus maximus et medius do not work in external rotation of hip joint. (2) The Caput fibulare of Musculus gastrocnemius works in pronation and not in spination of foot joint. (3) Musculus soleus works in pronation of foot joint.
