To make clear the mechanism of inhibition by glycine on the production of amylase and proteinase by Bacillus subtilis var. amyloliquefaciens, the effect of glycine on various metabolic activities of the bacterial cells was investigated. Glycine inhibited the incorporation of P32 into the phospholipid fraction whereas it did not affect the nucleic acid metabolism. Contrary to the result obtained from the washed cell system, the amylase formation by lysozyme-lysate of the bacteria was not inhibited by glycine. The activities of intracellular enzymes remained almost unchanged when the cells were incubated with glycine. The rsults suggest that glycine inhibits the secretion of extracellular enzyme.
