4-Methyl-5-ethylfluorene and related compounds were synthesized starting from 5-methylfluorene-4-carboxylic acid. The carbonyls on 4-position in 5-metbyl-4-acetylfluorene and the corresponding fluorenone were found to be moderately hindered sterically.
