Excretion variations of PVA and Cr203 and digestibilities by the indicator methods have been studied with swine fed on the diet containing these indicators at the constant rate.
The recovery rate from feces was a little lower for PVA than for Cr203, but assuming Cr203 recovery as 100%, the average relative recovery of PVA in individual animals was higher than that of PEG. There was little difference in excretion variation between PVA and Cr203, and in variation of estimated digestibility either of crude protein or of organic matter between PVA and Cr203 methods. PVA method resulted in generally a little lower digestibility than with Cr203 method, but there was no significant difference between digestibilities by PVA method and conventional feces-collection method.
PVA is successfully used as a water-soluble indicator in digestion experiments with swine.
