An alternative synthesis of the Corey's lactone intermediate (XIV) was achieved, which is now known to be an effective intermediate for several primary prostaglandins.2) This synthesis involved the oxidative cleavage of a bicyclo-[2, 2, 1] heptene (VII) as a key reaction in order to obtain an appropriate cyclopentane skeleton.
