Preparation of L-3-Hydoxyalkanoic Acids by Fungal Hydration of the Corresponding trans-2-Alkenoic Acids

Abstract

It was found that trans-2-octenoic acid was hydrated to 3-hydroxyoctanoic acid by the resting cells of Mucor species. By application of the hydrating activity of the fungi, we prepared seven L 3-hydroxyalkanoic acids (C₆_??_C₁₂) in moderate yields. The method is of value for the preparation of dextrorotatory 3-hydroxy acids.
