Abstract
Scanning electron microscopic observations were carried out on the adult male and female antennae of Periplaneta brunnea. Several kinds of sensory hair were found, and olfactory sensilla were more abundant on the male than the female. Electroantennogram (EAG) responses were recorded with the antennae to 26 compounds possessing diverse chemical functions. Prominent EAG responses were observed in both sexes in compounds having the hydroxyl or carbonyl group. Among examined linear alcohols and ketones of various carbon chain lengths, the strongest EAG response was recorded for C9 and C11 compounds in the male, whereas the female antenna did not respond differentially to these compounds. The present morphological and EAG results for P. brunnea were compared with those of P. americana.
