Peroxidized arachidonic acid obtained by hemoglobin or myoglobin catalysis in phosphate buffer was subjected to gas chromatography mass spectrometric analysis after reduction and hydrogenation. Monohydroxy icosanoic acid which was derived from monohydroperoxides consisted of six regioisomers, whose quantitative ratios were determined as follows: 8-, 12-<9-, 11-, <5-, 15-isomer. Prostaglandin F2α-like compounds possessing a dihydroxy cyclopentane ring were detected in the chromatogram of reduced derivatives. It is suggested that prostaglandin-like endoperoxides are formed by cyclization of the peroxy radical during the heme catalyzed peroxidation of arachidonic acid.
